A gunman shot and killed a Nassau County police officer and a civilian in the area of the Queens-Nassau border on Tuesday morning, officials said.
Officials identified the fallen cop as Police Officer Arthur Lopez, 29, of the Emergency Services Unit. He was an eight-year veteran of the department.
Both New York City and Nassau County police continue to search for the gunman, identified as Darrell Fuller.
Nassau Police Chief Steven Skrynecki said Officer Lopez and his partner were on patrol on Northern Boulevard when Lopez witnessed a silver Honda get into an accident and then drive off.
Lopez and his partner, who was behind the vehicle of the ESU car, pursued the Honda and pulled it over at about 11:10 a.m. at the entrance ramp to the Cross Island Parkway at 241st Street and Jamaica Avenue in Bellerose Terrace, a hamlet in Nassau County on the edge of the border with Queens. (In fact, the shooting may have actually happened a few feet inside Queens, the New York Times reported.)
Lopez exited the police car, approached the Honda, and briefly exchanged words with the driver, Chief Skrynecki said, when the driver shot Lopez once the chest.
Lopez, who was not wearing a bullet-proof vest, was rushed to North Shore LIJ Hospital in New Hyde Park where he died, officials said.
The suspect drove off but soon abandoned his car, Chief Skrynecki said. Then he carjacked a man, killing him, and drove off in the stolen car. The gunman quickly ditched that car in Queens and escaped on foot, the chief said.
Chief Skrynecki said the NYPD and NCPD formed a task force to track down the killer. Dozens of heavily armed cops from both departments pursued the suspect and conducted door-to-door searches at homes along the border.
The chief said numerous detectives were working the case.
Police have not yet identified the man who was killed in the carjacking.
Lopez was a volunteer firefighter and EMT with the Dix Hills Fire Department, officials said. He leaves behind his parents and a sister. Lopez was just shy of his 30th birthday.
Several nearby schools in Queens were put in "shelter in" status, which means no one goes outdoors, according to Department of Education spokeswoman Margie Feinberg. Those schools later allowed pupils to leave at dismissal time.
The southbound Cross Island Parkway remained closed at Jamaica Avenue near Belmont Park Racetrack. The northbound lanes were reopened just before 1 p.m. Motorists were told to expect heavy delays in both directions through the area.
Last week, a Nassau County highway patrolman was killed while responding to a multi-vehicle crash on the Long Island Expressway.
Thousands of police officers lined the streets outside St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Ronkonkoma Monday for the funeral of highway patrolman Joseph Olivieri.
Olivieri had gotten out of his patrol car at the crash scene when he was struck by a Cadillac Escalade SUV that also hit a Toyota that been involved in the earlier crash.
